Leaping into the Void

I will do my best to avoid sounding as though I'm writing these musings from the Holodeck...but it's fair to say that this is a fascinating idea. The workings of space and time are whimsical at most. Isn't it something that we humans invented a system that measures and divides our experience?

The concept of a Leap Year is that, periodically, in order to keep our accounting even, we have an extra 24 hours--a whole added day in the yearly cycle. In another way of considering this, however: since time is an illlusion, then it is not possible to make time, to save time, to make up time, to lose time, or even to waste it. Therefore, this thing that we talk about on this day, this number, 29 February, which only comes around so often, seems so odd. Since time is a construct, then we could allow ourselves to have as many February 29ths, or June 43rds, or October 40ths, as seem appropriate.

Perhaps we order our days in the way that we do so that each experience seems special. Summer, with its heavy breezes and luscious fruits, is so delightful, in part, because it is limited. If we were allowed to decide when or how days could be arranged, that might lead to a dreadful lack of diversity. (At this juncture, it seems as though summer may never arrive; although the groundhog has come and gone and issued forth a verdict suggesting that we will see summer sooner rather than later.)

I say all this because these are tumultuous times, and while we discuss elections and Leap Year and taxes with steadily increasing levels of anxiety, I am reminded of something a wise wizard said: "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us."

So...what do you choose to do with the time that is given to you? What tasks will you undergo? What will you set aside? And can you find a way to make the journey with a glad heart?

The Year is Ending! Long Live the Year!

The year 2015 is coming to an end, but remember: there is no such thing as this ending. Time is an illusion. This is really just the way that we mark the allotment that we are given.

I am saying this because some of us are feeling that we have not done enough during this year, or for the right reasons, or in the right order, et cetera, ad nauseam.

I think that we need to have a better perspective about what we are doing here. Certainly, we could all spend more time focusing--but we could also do a much better job extending compassion towards ourselves. Our thoughts, our dreams, our feelings: we can only benefit by making more space for them, so as to create a balanced life.

If we open our hands and commit to both sharing and protecting our hearts more, then we can allow those precepts will guide our actions.

Make your notes about the year, and make your wish list. Mostly--ask yourself what your heart is wanting now. What would make that heart feel supported? And finally, what can you add to your life that will allow you to shine your heart forward in a precarious world?

Best of luck to you in your process of discovery, friends. I stand ready to help with tools: massage, Reiki, meditation, mindfulness and more.

More Light to you, now and always.

Knitting for North County

I am married to a high school principal. As a result of this, I have become aware that there is a group of underserved children at North County High School who could really use support in order to have the life tools that they need.

The arena in which I choose to offer my hands is in helping to create warm things for the children to wear in the cold months. Having said this, I am not a particularly talented knitter--but I *can* make a scarf that will keep someone happy and warm.

All of the elements are donated. Right now, I am donating my time, my ideas, the materials, and whatever talent I possess. I encourage you to join me. If you knit, please knit for my team! (And let me know if you are interested in a knit-in, with food and movies and fun things to drink. I'm all about it.)

If you are not a bad knitter such as myself, then you are certainly welcome to donate finished items. Anything warm (sweaters, scarves, hats, gloves, socks, etc.) is welcome.

And I hear the children have a food pantry...in case you would like to bring canned goods.

Thanks for reading this! Please know that no matter how much we accomplish, we are doing the right thing.

All Hallow's Eve

10/31/2015

Hallowe'en, or All Hallows Eve, is said to be the day when the veil is thinnest between the worlds. Our world lies adjacent to the world in which our lost beloveds dwell, this belief states, and at certain times, the membrane between us is so thin that you can see what's rubbing against us as it stands on the other side.

What are the conditions that surround us as we seek to investigate our health and wellness? For example:

Do the conditions include ignorance of our own habits, or our familial health factors?

What about our workplace--is there time to take breaks, equipment that allows us to work healthfully, support for those who might need to call and excuse themselves from their duties due to illness?

And what of our beliefs? What do we truly hold dear in relationship to health and wellness? Are these things that we must earn? If so, in what fashion might we do so? Is everyone equally deserving of methods and means of obtaining health? If not--how does an individual gain or lose the privilege? Can it be regained, once lost? (If the answer is yes, then by what process would this take place?)

Ultimately, we are best served if we maintain our flexibility around our beliefs. We can start by shining a light into the corners of our minds to determine what thoughts are present and active there...and then deciding which ones deserve the space they're using. The ugly ones are the only real goblins that most of us are likely to face on a regular basis.

How Far We Fall

The change of seasons is a time when the world is breathtaking and unstable, and we may feel unstable along with it. While there is nothing we can do to create more stability in the world around us, we can choose to continue our traditions of self-care and nurturing. Those habits are the glue that sustains us when everything else is shifting.

And so...if you don't have habits (massage, meditation, chanting, stretching, visioning, et cetera) to heal your world, then start some. And if you had some, but fell off, then remember you can start over any time at all.

The power is in the moment we are living in. Be here...be healed.

How Blue the Moon

7/31/2015

Many things have been said about the moon that rose over our heads tonight--why, and for how long, it would be blue. That last bit is a euphemism, of course. The phrase "blue moon" has no more to do with the color blue than Elvis had to do with Soloflex. These are not fish that swam in the same ocean.

A blue moon is the name for the event that takes when more than one full moon occurs within the span of a month. Some people believe this is an intense spiritual event; a portent of many wonderful things to come. Others think the blue moon is a happening that we might be fearful about. Yet others believe this is simply an example of the odds playing out.

The significance for us is that we might notice a physical difference in our bodies when there is a shift in the gravitational forces that the moon rules. Like any other time, it is valuable to trust our perception, believe our experience, and make notes about our conclusions.

Oh, it's worthwhile to do this every day--it's good practice, and it deepens our connection to our bodies. But it can be a challenge to notice our bodies on purpose, when there are so many things in our personal spheres that drown out the subtle cues we feel. Our work is to notice anyway. To turn the volume up, or down, in order to gather whatever information we need to empower ourselves with perception.

It makes all the difference.

There are many ways to fuel this, including meditation, yoga, massage, and exercise. Noticing our experience in our bodies is a powerful way to make our experience better.

Be good to yourself.

It Happens So Fast

3/31/2015

It happens so fast--we never know where the pain comes from! This is a brief note about a self-care tactic we can fit into the course of our days.

Whatever the course of your day looks like--whether you are sitting on a desk, driving a bus, leading a class, or anything in between, you can use the body scan to tune into your body and become more aware of any areas of pain or discomfort. Just move your awareness from one area to the next. Try starting at your scalp, then moving to your neck, then shoulders, and so on, until you have reached your feet.

Most often, the act of becoming aware of the area will help to relieve some of your pain. You are also likely to have an idea of how to address the areas in question, once you have given them some of your attention.

Start with the scan, and see how richly your attention creates its own reward.

January surprises

1/29/2015

The January meditation meeting is cancelled. There has been an Unfortunate Incident in the building, which should be remedied in short order. Until that time, individual appointments are fine; group meetings will likely be a bit awkward.

Surprises like this one are always a good reminder that it helps to be flexible; to have a way of finding our center when life hands us a pot of boiled okra.
I am looking forward to seeing you again.

Happy New Year!

1/1/2015

Welcome to 2015--you made it! I hope that your year-end celebrations were joyful and memorable in positive ways.

Now that we are returning to our usual routines, it is a good time to take inventory.

As you may be aware, I am not a fan of writing New Year's resolutions. They are not usually realistic, not personalized, and not flexible enough to create allowances for life's surprises.

Instead of creating the resolutions: now is an excellent time to take stock of your position. What do you want for the year? This is not a time for self-castigation, but rather for clarity and compassion. What changes would you like to see--in personal and professional relationships; in finances; in adventures; in hope?

One thing is sure: whatever our goals might be, we are better suited to finding a way to meet them when we take excellent care of ourselves. There are a great many tools that we can use to help us keep perspective and handle, with grace, the numerous stresses of life. Massage and Reiki can help a great deal with self-care. Meditation can help, as well.

As we look to the future, let's ask ourselves a question: How can I make the life that I am living look more like the life I have been hoping for?

Remember that I am always here to offer help and solutions.

Baltimore Bodyworks (Goddess Bodyworks) is the bodywork division of Goddess Within, LLC. I am currently providing services (e.g., energywork) remotely, courtesy of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and looking forward to meeting with people again when it is safe to do so. That includes you!

Tanisia Smith was originally licensed to practice massage in the same year that epic fantasy writer Robin Hobb published Assassin's Apprentice, the first book in the Farseer Trilogy. Read on through the Liveship Traders trilogy, the Fitz and the Fool trilogy, the Tawny Man trilogy, and the Rain Wilds chronicles...because there will be dragons. This author writes magic and mayhem beautifully and immersively. Her work is delicious.

Since I'm out of the nerd closet, 2002 was the year when we watched the middle movie of a trilogy focusing on a cross-species group of fellows who decided to walk about a thousand miles to drop a ring into a volcano. Only some of us had feelings about it later when we found out they could have hitched a ride.

All those who seek healing are welcome at my table.
