What is it?
Massage for relaxation is a general full-body treatment that focuses on softening the contractile tissues that respond to stress. Because stress is a contributing factor to every major chronic health condition, providing relief from the stress response is a powerful healthcare intervention.
Why would I choose this?
You may want massage for relaxation for any one of a thousand different reasons, including the following:
1. Job stress (including the I-hate-my-job blues)
2. Family tension
3. Insomnia or other sleeping challenges
4. Anxiety
5. Depression
6. Recent breakups or other losses
How can this help?
Massage can help you relax by stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system (read: telling your body to calm down). This is the system that is in charge of increasing gastric motility/improving digestion, encouraging deep breathing, slowing your heart rate, and helping your muscles to achieve a lengthened resting position. Muscles shorten when they contract--so when you're showing off those new bulges in your biceps, you're contracting those muscles to do it. There's just no way to show them off when you're relaxed.
You can learn more about what massage can do for you at the Touch Research Institute, or at the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (a division of the National Institutes of Health).
